Dark Numbers is a fairly new band from Portland, Oregon (US) featuring current and former members of bands like Humours,
Cliterati, Hot Victory, Poison Idea, Stöller, Lord Dying, Prize Hog, and
Sioux. A lot of the band's sound comes from the baritone guitar riffs of
guitarist Dan O'Hara and the dramatic vocals/synths of frontwoman
Natalie Lucio.
Dark Number's debut album 'If It Was It Would Be So' was released just a few days ago (24th May 2019) via Nadine Records a local independent label of Portland.
The sound of the band is not easily categorizable into a single genre and that's probably because the members worked on mixing each one's different influences, moods and emotional states in a productive way to achieve the final result. Being melodic but heavy at the same time, with atmospheric vocals that tend to get quite space-like in many cases and supported beautifully by spiffy and at the same time powerful backing vocals, the band wallows in melancholy in a constantly dark atmosphere. At times their sound flirts with doom, sludge and prog but always through an alternative prism and despite the whole dark atmosphere and the duskiness, which I nevertheless enjoyed, if I had to describe the whole listening experience with two words I'd choose: "emotionally cathartic".
The album is available in colored vinyl: jade, jade with smoke, dark purple, and purple-gold. (Buy here)
