2016 has been a very productive year for the Greek heavy Underground Scene. Through Downtuned Radio we've been promoting all those releases continuously and now the time has arrived to choose some of the best releases and present them to you.
The 'Downtuned crew' agreed that the following releases are probably those that you shouldn't miss or overlook.
They are presented to you in alphabetical order and at the bottom of the page there is a mixcloud link where you can listen a compilation with selected tracks from these releases. Enjoy!

1000Mods - Repeated Exposure To...

Η αρχή γίνεται με τους Κορίνθιους 1000Mods. Από τις πολυαγαπημένες μπάντες του ελληνικού - και όχι μόνο - κοινού που μας άφησαν έναν δίσκο με πάρα πολλή ενέργεια ενώ παράλληλα έκαναν ένα tour Ευρωπαϊκών διαστάσεων. Στο νέο τους άλμπουμ μοιράζουν «επαγγελματικά» stoner κολλητικά riff.
Starting with 100mods from Hiliomodi, Korinth. One of Greek audience's (and not only) favorite bands. They created a high-energy album and toured throughout Europe to promote it. In their latest release thei deliver "professionaly" addictive heavy riffs.

Η συνέχεια γίνεται με τους πρωτοεμφανιζόμενους 2 Headed Dogs. Μία DIY περίπτωση, από πολλές απόψεις, ένα κρυμμένο διαμάντι από το Καναλλάκι Πρεβέζης. Ο δίσκος τους αποτελείται από fuzz-αριστά κομμάτια σε έναν συνδυασμό garage και heavy rock.

Next in row are "2 Headed Dogs" from Kanallaki, Preveza and their debut self titled album. A true DIY gem that emerged straight from the deepest of the underground and found it's way to Nasoni's ears, resulting in a vinyl release. Their album is a combination of garage and heavy rock mixed in a fuzzy way.

Ακολουθούν οι Arrakis από την Θεσσαλονίκη. Μόλις τον περασμένο Νοέμβρη κυκλοφόρησαν τον δεύτερο τους δίσκο, μία χαμηλοκουρδισμένη, μοναδική περίπτωση που κινείται σε ψυχεδελικό heavy rock ύφος με αρκετό τζαμάρισμα και πάθος.
Ακολουθούν οι Arrakis από την Θεσσαλονίκη. Μόλις τον περασμένο Νοέμβρη κυκλοφόρησαν τον δεύτερο τους δίσκο, μία χαμηλοκουρδισμένη, μοναδική περίπτωση που κινείται σε ψυχεδελικό heavy rock ύφος με αρκετό τζαμάρισμα και πάθος.
Arrakis from Thessaloniki. In November they released their second full-album, a unique, downtuned release with heavy psych mood, direct and straightforward with a constant jam attitude.
Birthday Kicks - Black Echo Trap

Οι Λαρισαίοι Birthday Kicks προσέφεραν έναν από τους πιο ευχάριστους και cool δίσκους της χρονιάς σε garage ύφος, ο οποίος έπαιξε ξανά και ξανά στα ηχεία μας και τελικά άρεσε σε μεγάλο εύρος ακροατών.
Birthday Kicks from Larisa offered us one of the most pleasant and cool albums of the year in a garage attitude. This release was blasting through our speakers again and again and also found its way to a big range of listeners.
Οι Λαρισαίοι Birthday Kicks προσέφεραν έναν από τους πιο ευχάριστους και cool δίσκους της χρονιάς σε garage ύφος, ο οποίος έπαιξε ξανά και ξανά στα ηχεία μας και τελικά άρεσε σε μεγάλο εύρος ακροατών.

Green Yeti - The Yeti Has Landed

Στη συνέχεια φτάνει το Green Yeti από την Αθήνα με μέλη των Brotherhood Of Sleep, Stonenrow και 9oz. of Nothing: ένας "συμπαγής", ογκώδης, ψυχεδελικός doom δίσκος που μας έκανε να χαθούμε στους καπνούς.
Green Yeti from Athens consisting of members of 'Brotherhood of Sleep', 'Stonenrow' and '9oz. of Nothing' released a massive, solid psych-doom album that led us to "wander" and get lost in foggy and smoked up pathways.
Στη συνέχεια φτάνει το Green Yeti από την Αθήνα με μέλη των Brotherhood Of Sleep, Stonenrow και 9oz. of Nothing: ένας "συμπαγής", ογκώδης, ψυχεδελικός doom δίσκος που μας έκανε να χαθούμε στους καπνούς.

Άλλο ένα Αθηναϊκό τρίο, οι "παλιοί" Korsikov, κυκλοφόρησαν έναν προσεγμένο, oγκώδη και βαρύγδουπο sludge δίσκο και μας παρουσιάσαν τις πολλές και διαφορετικές τους επιρροές. Ακούσαμε αγαπημένες συμμετοχές των Babis (Planet of Zeus) και Stavros (Sadhus the smoking community).
Another trio from Athens, Korsikov, released a high volume and solid sludge album and presented us their many different musical influences. In two of the album's tracks are also featured in vocal 'Babis' (Planet of Zeus) and 'Stavros' (Sadhus, the smoking community).
Άλλο ένα Αθηναϊκό τρίο, οι "παλιοί" Korsikov, κυκλοφόρησαν έναν προσεγμένο, oγκώδη και βαρύγδουπο sludge δίσκο και μας παρουσιάσαν τις πολλές και διαφορετικές τους επιρροές. Ακούσαμε αγαπημένες συμμετοχές των Babis (Planet of Zeus) και Stavros (Sadhus the smoking community).

Monk - Black Earth Beneath
Φτάνουμε στους Monk, εκ Σύρου ορμώμενοι, οι οποίοι προς το τέλος του 2016 μας δίδαξαν πώς παίζεται το ψυχεδελικό doom με αισθητική ταινία τρόμου, σε μια επίσης πολύ καλά δουλεμένη κυκλοφορία, από κάθε άποψη. Μνείες 'ευθύνης' για τις δύο άνω κυκλοφορίες στην αγαπημένης μας Fuzz Ink. Records.
Monk from Piskopio, Syros Island, taught us how the "psychedelic horror doom" is played, in an open-minded and very carefully produced release with great atmosphere.

Naxatras - II

Αφού έκαναν το ντου και μας άφησαν άφωνους με την προηγούμενη κυκλοφορία τους, οι Naxatras επέστρεψαν μέσα σε έναν χρόνο ακριβώς (Απρίλης 2016) για να αποδείξουν ότι είχαν έμπνευση, διατηρώντας τον ψυχεδελικό - space rock ήχο τους.
Αφού έκαναν το ντου και μας άφησαν άφωνους με την προηγούμενη κυκλοφορία τους, οι Naxatras επέστρεψαν μέσα σε έναν χρόνο ακριβώς (Απρίλης 2016) για να αποδείξουν ότι είχαν έμπνευση, διατηρώντας τον ψυχεδελικό - space rock ήχο τους.
Following the success of their debut release, Naxatras from Thessaloniki did it again! One year after their debut they strike again to prove that they have inspiration, continuing on their psychedelic, space rock attitude.
Nightstalker - As above, So Below

Οι συστάσεις περιττές, οι Nightstalker δεν σταματούν ποτέ να κάνουν κουμάντο. Το As above, so below μας θυμίζει ότι το stoner δεν έχει σταματήσει να φοριέται, από τους μπαμπάδες του είδους.
Nightstalker need no introduction. The fathers of the Greek heavy underground are here with their brand new release to remind us that they won't stop doing what they've been doing for almost 3 decades.

Ο πιο πειραματικός δίσκος από όσους αναφέρονται. Πρόκειται για μια πολύ «εσωτερική» κυκλοφορία, για τους λάτρεις του doom-sludge και του πειραματισμού. Άλλωστε είναι μεγάλη και προσωπική υπόθεση το να δημιουργούν τόση δύναμη δύο άτομα.

Ο πιο πειραματικός δίσκος από όσους αναφέρονται. Πρόκειται για μια πολύ «εσωτερική» κυκλοφορία, για τους λάτρεις του doom-sludge και του πειραματισμού. Άλλωστε είναι μεγάλη και προσωπική υπόθεση το να δημιουργούν τόση δύναμη δύο άτομα.
Omega monolith from Athens. Their release is the most experimental album in this list. A massive, 'esoteric', strange, atmospheric doom-sludge album with its own unique character. It is admirable the fact that a duet of musicians can create such powerful music.
Planet Of Zeus - Loyal to the Pack

Planet of Zeus from Athens released their fourth album introducing us to a different side of their "musical self" and their many different influences that have integrated in their music.

Συνεχίζοντας με stoner διαθέσεις, ο πρώτος δίσκος των Αρτινών Stoned Spirit έχει κλασικές stoner καταβολές και λίγα ψήγματα μέταλ. Σε συνδυασμό με τις αργές blues στιγμές του, φτιάχνει έναν ήχο που έχουμε μάθει να βάζουμε πλέον δυνατά στα ηχεία μας.
Stoned Spirit from Arta. Their debut album is a straightforward release with classic stoner character along with some hidden metal influences. Their slow, blues moments result in a sound that leads you to turn up the volume and enjoy the groove.

Είναι πλέον σίγουρο ότι οι δίσκοι των This is nowhere δεν πρέπει να λείπουν από καμία συλλογή. Το Music to Relapse είναι μία ακόμα μοναδική κυκλοφορία από τη μπάντα, με εθιστικά, ταξιδιάρικα ψυχεδελικά riff και bluesιάρικη noise διάθεση.
This is nowhere from Theesaloniki. It is perfectly clear that if you don't have the albums of 'This is nowhere' in your collection then you are definitely missing something. Their album "music to relapse" is another unique release with addictive, psyched-up riffs and noisy, heavy, blues attitude. You don't want to miss this one.

Τέλος, οι Universe217 για 4η φορά πειραματίζονται με doom και «αιθέριες» ψυχεδέλειες. Σίγουρα ξέρουμε ότι ο ήχος τους έχει έρθει για να εδραιωθεί και το Change είναι γεμάτο με τέτοιες στιγμές, που μοναδικά ξέρουν να χτίζουν.
Τέλος, οι Universe217 για 4η φορά πειραματίζονται με doom και «αιθέριες» ψυχεδέλειες. Σίγουρα ξέρουμε ότι ο ήχος τους έχει έρθει για να εδραιωθεί και το Change είναι γεμάτο με τέτοιες στιγμές, που μοναδικά ξέρουν να χτίζουν.
Last but not least, the latest release of Universe217 from Athens. Once again they do what they know best, that is experimenting with ethereal, doom-psych mood. Through the years they have established their place in the Greek underground scene and this album is just another great addition with powerful moments that they know so well to create.
