[Live Report] Adolf Plays The Jazz, This Is Nowhere, Tuber Live @ Drama, 17/09/2012

Needless to mention that I am a huge fan of This Is Nowhere and I felt like I was stuck out in my town so I decided to make this road-trip with George (Just A Burn) to enjoy one more night with the sweet sounds of This Is Nowhere in the wonderful city of Drama.

[Quick Fixes] Goya - Demo

Year: 2012
Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona
Tracklist:
01. God Lie
02. Blackfire
03. Mourning Sun
04. Opoponax
05. Night Creeps
Goya is a trio from Phoenix and they released their first demo few days ago showing their monstrous teeth to the world. They play some wicked trippy, stoned out doom and I have to say they're really good. Of course comparisons with Electric Wizard are not only inevitable but justified too (each track brings you closer and closer to EW and at the same time adds a little more of Goya's touch). Five weed-scented tunes, tuned down for your sick pleasure. Take a walk in their bandcamp, download it by paying anything you want or grab a physical copy, burn up a fatty and "watch" it burn under Goya's grooves... Heavy!

[Live Report] Fjodor, Circassian @ Athens, 17/09/2012

 Fjodor, Circassian @ Athens, 17/09/2012

I could start the review with poetic or literary clichés like "a rainy Monday afternoon of September...". The truth is that it was -but let's not stand on it- which of course made a lot of people staying home.

[Quick Fixes] Golden Cup - Vagabond

Year: 2012
Tracklist:
01. Untitled 1
02. Untitled 2
03. Untitled 3
Golden Cup is a project by Luca Massolin and here is their new full length work, "Vagabond" released in 250 vinyl copies by the excellent British label Blackest Rainbow. The first side is a 15min mantric piece of cosmic psychedelia while in the second side ritualistic rhythms take their place for invoking forests' holy spirits. Quite a meditative release!

[Quick Fixes] Snarf - Arrak Bisa Ular

Snarf - Arrak Bisa Ular

Year: 2012
Hometown: Basel, Switzerland
Tracklist:
01. Arrak Bisa Ular

Time for some really slow stuff from the Swiss trio, Snarf. "Arrak Bisa Ular" is a one track EP, clocking in at 32 minutes and it's band's third release. This is what you need to end your gloomy autumnal day. A dark, hypnotic, slower than it gets doom trip. Add a generous portion of serious fuzzy bass lines, a skull crushing guitar, lazy 'n' heavy drumming, some sinful languid vocal invocations and you're ready to go. You can stream it through their website and download for free their two previous releases.

[Review] Beak> - >>

Beak> - >>
Most of you are probably familiar with Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Honestly speaking, I never liked them. Yes, I've heard "Dummy" and yes I know how talented they are and how they're mixing all these styles but I cannot stand them. Maybe my taste is shit but this does not change the fact. Anyway, couple of years ago mr. Barlow started a new project called Beak>, along with Matt Williams and Billy Fuller.
They released their first album in 2009 and in June 2012 their second one. I cannot remember how I found about them but after the first listening of ">>" I was really impressed. I always admitted that Barrow is a great musician even if I didn't like his music. But Beak> is definitely an opinion changer...

[Review] T.H.U.M.B. - Primordial Echoes For Modern Bigfoots

"They vanished in the same forest without a trace. Not one of them was ever found or heard from again.'
'And you suspect what?' Scully asked. 'Bigfoot maybe?'
'Not likely,' Mulder answered deadpan. 'That's a lot of flannel to choke down. Even for Bigfoot.'
Scully sighed. She should have known better than to joke about Bigfoot to Mulder. Bigfoot wasn't a joke to him."
Mulder couldn't be more right. Bigfoot lives in Italy. Actually they're three of them, they're known with the alias T.H.U.M.B. and they spread stoner grooves all over the world.

[Quick Fixes] Burning Man - Ronin

Burning Man - Ronin
Debut release for Portugal's Burning Man, a 18min blast of heavy, sinister and yet melodic sludge metal. Even if I'm not a great fan of this kind (I'm in a more rockish state this period), the dirty, thick slabs of heavy guitar riffs, the malevolent vocals and the frenzy bass-drums combo that concrete the sound can't pass unnoticed.

[Review] Various Artists - For Lee Jackson In Space

Various Artists - For Lee Jackson In Space
"This tribute album came together in love and honor of Lee Jackson, writer, music fan, dear friend. All profits will go to the Texas chapter of the ALS Association, who can be reached via alsa-texas.org -- please feel free to join our Facebook discussion group linked below if you'd like to learn more about the remarkable man who we all dearly miss."
The truth is I didn't know who Lee Jackson was until I found this amazing compilation. From my understanding though, he was a great music lover and a very good writer too. And that is enough -at least for me- to dedicate him a massive comp like this one.

[Quick Fixes] Misty Morning - Saint Shroom

Year: 2011
Hometown: Rome, Italy
Tracklist:
01. Saint Shroom
02. Jellotron

Website | Facebook | Bandcamp
Physical Needs: Doomanoid Records

Last year Misty Morning released "Saint Shroom" 12" (limited to 250 red vinyl copies) but just now I had the chance to check it. "Saint Shroom" features two extended  tracks (12 and 10 minutes each) and I'm somehow confused by listening to them. They basically are a space doom band as they describe themselves but their influences are so many that at times my mind gets dazed, especially in the same titled track. They have the skills to successfully incorporate them in their music but sometimes when you're trying to stack so many things in one place, you're lacking of room to breath. "Jellotron" is more concentrated, having a great flow and a dreamy end point. In conclusion, it's a interesting work probably needing a couple of spins for unfolding all of its virtues. Though I wonder how a full album is going to sound like...

[Review] Sound Of Ground - Sky Colored Green

Sound of Ground - Sky colored Green
Sound Of Ground is a power trio from Moscow. While they're together as a band for two years now and already released two EPs, I've discovered them a while ago when I was looking for any updates on The Re-Stoned's new album in their label's website (R.A.I.G). These youngsters have just released their first album, "Sky Colored Green", featuring 11 songs (four of them were also in their second EP). And even if they're not making any kind of breakthroughs in our beloved stoner, they successfully manipulate a wide range of influences giving a lot of variety among their songs.

[Quick Fixes] Son Of A Witch - Son Of A Witch EP

Son Of A Witch - Son Of A Witch EP

Year: 2012
Hometown: Natal, Brazil
Tracklist:
01. Far Away From Dreaming (Giant Spheres and Humanoids)
02. Mountain Ceiling
03. Snake Arms Woman

Debut release for the Brazilians Son Of A Witch, a 3-track eruptive stoner metal EP. A loud, potent heavy punch full of earth-shaking riffs. I specially enjoyed the second track "Mountain Ceiling" with the spoken-words' parts building a majestic atmosphere. These guys passed the loud-meter test with great success. Let's hope a full album to come out soon... Download it by paying anything you want.

Uncle Marvin's Musicletter #01

Uncle Marvin's Musicletter #01
Greetings Earthlings,
My name is Uncle Marvin and I'm a Martian. My appreciation for your planet's heavy music is huge. I recently found out about Downtuned Mag and came in touch 'cause I wanted to contribute some of my music discoveries. Since my knowledge on any earthy language is restricted, don't expect me to write a lot of words. I'm only going to post some good universal grooves and most of them will be free since access to your money is quite hard for a Martian. So in my corner you'll be able to find a lot of cool music as well as some videos that drew my attention and who knows what else...
Welcome and enjoy your stay!

[The 60's-70's Vault] Echoes In The Dark Compilation (The 70's)

Echoes In The Dark Compilation (The 70's)
Pijo, one of Downtuned Radio's djs and webzine's contributor in The 70's Vault created a big, fat hard/heavy/prog rock compilation from late 60's to '74/'75, featuring songs he played in his shows.

[Quick Fixes] Shrine - Talismandala

Shrine - Talismandala
Year: 2012
Hometown: Swindon, UK
Tracklist:
01. Celestial Channeling And Talismandala Meditation
02. High Five
03. Archaic Calls To The Gods Of The Sun And Guardians Of The Sky
04. My Mother's A Terrible Lover
05. Temple
Facebook | Bandcamp

"Talismandala" is Shrine's third release, featuring five tracks. While they're mainly focused on psychedelia, each track's style is quite different creating a wonderful blend. The first song is a great sample of straight-forward heavy psych with some beautiful key parts while in "High Five" they're stepping into jazz rock territory covering the jazz-classic "Take Five" (composed by Paul Desmond and originally recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet for its 1959) . "Archaic Calls To The Gods Of The Sun And Guardians Of The Sky" is a kind of weird noise rock jam which works relatively good. "My Mother's A Terrible Lover" is a more laid-back one where the use of yodel-styled vocals put an extra touch of craziness. The 15min "Temple" reminds me of Mugstar so it's very hard not to like it.

[Quick Fixes] The Re-Stoned - Re-Session

Year: 2012
Hometown: Moscow, Russia
Tracklist:
01. Sea Monk
02. Aura
03. Cowboys & Aliens

While we're waiting for their third album, The Re-Stoned put out a live session mini-album, recorded last February in Moscow. Fine psych instrumental rock packed up in three tracks, working as the perfect quick fix until their new album is out. I have to mention the special guests who joined them for this session: Glenda Pescado and Pet Bingham from space-rockers Sendelica ( in case you're interested, they've released a new album too, called "The Satori In Elegance of the Majestic Stonegazer").

[Quick Fixes] Sedulus - Sedulus EP

Sedulus - Sedulus EP
Year: 2012
Hometown: London, UK
Tracklist:
01. Pilgrim
02. Alfalfa

Second EP for the British Sedulus. I had it in my to-check list for a while (it was released in April) and fortunately a couple of days ago I checked it. "Pilgrim" is one of the best songs I've heard for a while now. A heavy as hell, psych-stoner mammoth with tons of pulsating riffs. "Alfalfa" has a more Melvins-oriented structure and the vocals are pretty neat. Although I liked both tracks, I would prefer to see more tunes like "Pilgrim". Perhaps having a longer duration too... It was released in 100 copies and only three of them remaining so if you're interested, hurry up and check their bandcamp.
