The 'Berlin School' is a style of electronic music that was 'invented' in West Berlin in the mid-70s; if we want to dig deeper we could say that it is related to 'progressive electronic' music, while the innovative Berlin School recordings are considered the precursor of ambient music.

Tangerine Dream and their album Phaedra (1974) is deemed as the release that shaped the whole Berlin School sound in its first steps along with artists like Klaus Schulze, and Manuel Gottsching

The basic difference between the Berlin School and the other genres of electronic music of that era is the repetition of musical motifs through a sequencer, a device that among other things can create rhythms without the use of physical or electronic drums. Besides Germany, the sound of the Berlin School was played with success by many artists allover Europe mainly but in the USA as well.
